Tom Hassall – Founder & Lead Instructor, Deep Breath Institute

I’m a registered paramedic and the founder of Deep Breath Institute.

I started DBI because too many first aid and CPR courses focus on ticking boxes instead of building real confidence. My goal is simple: help people understand what to do, why they’re doing it, and feel capable of stepping in when it matters.

All of my training is based on real-world experience from frontline emergency care, delivered in small groups so there’s time for questions, discussion, and hands-on practice. I use practical examples, real scenarios, and plain language to make the skills easy to understand and remember.

Welcome to your online course

Before you start your online course, you will need to make sure you have supplied us with the following information:

Important: If you haven’t supplied us with your USI or AVETMISS data, you must complete the required information before continuing.

Course Format

The flexible format of the course means that you can log in as many times as required to complete the course – you do not need to complete the course all in one sitting.

Learning content is provided in an online format within the course. The assessment component consists of:

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Written questions
  • Student self-video assessments
  • Child Protection Concern/Disclosure Record forms

Please note: You will be required to make two (2) videos of yourself, verbally explaining the required assessment outcome. If you do not wish to complete video assessment questions, please consider an alternative mode of delivery (e.g. Online with face-to-face assessment).

About the Case Studies

Please note that all case studies within this course are fictional. As a wide variety of job descriptions and workplace environments exist, case studies may not always cover all types of possible scenarios encountered within your job role or scope of work.

However, these case studies should allow you to apply your decision making and duty of care responsibility across the board, when recognising and reporting children and young people at risk.
